Abbey Church of Saint Gildas Rhuys

SAINT GILDAS DE RHUYS

    Site et monument historique

What we can see of the abbey today hardly reflects the considerable influence it played on the economic and cultural life of the Rhuys Peninsula and the entire region since its foundation (mid-6th century). .

The abbey is nonetheless a rare testimony to Romanesque art in Brittany.
This radiation was accompanied by intense activity, the monks clearing the immense forests and producing salt in the coastal marshes.
Their influence largely exceeded the peninsula since they long claimed ownership of the Glénan archipelago in Finistère.
The prestige of Saint Gildas in Brittany, the miracles attributed to him and the presence of his relics in the abbey church only increased the reputation of the place.
